About the Artist
Prairie Spirit Baskets was created in 2007 to
provide a venue for Carol Sanders to put her passion for basketry into
action. When Carol started making baskets she at once knew this was her
calling. Attracted by the creativity that basket weaving allows, Carol at
once started to experiment with design and creating her own basket designs.
After taking a class on antler and rib baskets with Karen Zane, Carol started to focus on rib style
baskets, enjoying the challenge and versatility provided by a rib structured
basket.
Carol studied rib baskets under the instruction of Joan Stoneham at John
Campbell Folk School in North Carolina, learning to incorporate natural elements into basket
design. Carol also has had the opportunity to work with Martha Younkin, a
talented and well-known natural fiber artist from Missouri.
When Carol isn't weaving (or working at her day job) Carol is an
avid amateur naturalist whose favorite moments are spent in the outdoors
enjoying nature on their farm in central Missouri and when time allows it, her
family's property in northern Wisconsin, where Carol grew up. Carol's
inspiration for her works comes from the Midwest's beauty - forests,
grasslands, birds, and animals.
Since purchasing their farm in Missouri in 2001, Carol and her husband Dave have been
working
to convert the 260 acre property to its native state, tall grass prairie and oak
savannah by planting wild flowers and native prairie grasses into areas that had
been fescue pastures and crop fields. Over the past few years they
have seen increases in quail and song bird populations. In addition to the farm
providing inspiration it also is a great source for the the materials for her
baskets. Carol collects pieces of wood, weaving materials and even antlers
from her property.
Carol's private studio is currently located in St. Charles Missouri.
In the future, when Carol is able to dedicated herself full time to basketry,
there are plans for a public studio in Mexico Missouri.
