Basket Weaving Classes and Kits

 Prairie Spirit Baskets offers a variety of options if you are interested in weaving your own basket.  You can purchase just the pattern, or a kit which contains all of the materials along with an instruction guide.  Or, you may schedule a workshop where you'll have personal instruction in creating your basket.

Basket Offerings Description

"Hickory Hollow"

Workshop (1 day) - $45

 A large sturdy bushel-style basket, 15" in diameter and 11" tall,  with brown leather handles provides practical yet attractive storage. The basket, woven with 3 different shades of brown, starts with a square solid-woven base and rounds out to finish with natural cane embellishment and lashing.

"Lilacs by the Lake"

 This 10.5"tall 9.5" deep 15.5" long basket in shades of blue, mauve and forest green makes a great summertime picnic tote that will surely be the envy of the beach.  It has a wooden base and is woven with sea grass and space-dyed reed using a chase weave.  Sea grass woven handles provide a unique feature and the Cherokee Wheel embellishment striking contrast.

"Osage Jewel"

 An 11" long, 8" wide, 6" tall basket woven on a wooden base. The basket incorporates sea grass as weavers, handles, and embellishment. Woven bushel-style handles add a unique touch and the space-dyed reed provides a jewel-like color palette of ruby and topaz, and the forest green complements the sea grass. The embellishment, a Cherokee Wheel variation, adds the American Indian flavor to the design.

"Winter Rose"

 		 An ample-sized, 17"L X 10"W X 8.5" H, versatile oval market-style basket starts with a square woven base and uses basic basket weaving skills. Shaping will be emphasized. This basket's red accents makes it a great holiday gift.

Antler Frames - $30

Antler Basket Instruction Guide - $5.00 each (Discounts available on quantity buys)

 		 A contemporary rib-style basket, 6-8" diameter, which incorporates a small Whitetail antler as a handle.  Students will be able to chose from a variety of colors and embellishments to make their basket uniquely theirs.  Students will weave a basket using an antler frame created by the instructor. Students will receive a 9-page Antler Basket Basics instruction guide. Students will also learn how to drill their own antlers and create their own antler frames.  Students will need to bring an awl.

Antler Basket Instruction Guide - $5.00 each (Discounts available on quantity buys)

 		 7" wide, 8" tall, and 4 " deep this is an Interesting and functional contemporary rib-style basket whose construction incorporates a medium-sized whitetail antler.  Basket is designed to hang on the wall and is large enough to hold letters or keys. Students will weave using a basket frame created by the instructor. Includes embellishment of beads, feathers, porcupine quills and an antler button.

"Missouri River Market" 

Workshop (1 day) - $40

Pattern - $3.50 each (Discounts available on quantity buys)		 A 16”L X 8” W X 7” H market-type basket with a solid woven base and D-handle constructed using a combination of smoked and natural reed with a start and stop weaving technique.  An embellishment of natural reed is added at the end to create the interesting diamond pattern.  Shaping skills will be the focus, helping the students achieve the square market look.

"Mini Rib"

 

Workshop (1 day)- $35

Kits - $25

 A 8"Lx6"Wx6"w rib basket made with 2 6-inch hoops and #1 round reed.  Students can chose from a variety of different colors to create their own unique basket.  Rib style basketry techniques will be the focus of this class.

"Inspiration Tote"

Workshop (1 day)- $45

A large basket 16” L X 8”W X 11” H at rim basket which uses basic start and stop weave.  Incorporates a simple embellishment resulting in an attractive pattern of contrasting smoke and natural reed.  A simple push-in handle is used in this pattern. Shaping skills will be the focus, helping students achieve the shape the desire.

"Harvest Bowl"

Workshop (1 day)- $35

Pattern - $3.50 each (Discounts available on quantity buys)		 A medium-sized bowl-shaped basket 6” tall and 9“ in diameter designed with neutral colors. Its size provides unlimited possibilities.  It features a solid-wood base and a unique rim giving it added interest.

"Bountiful Harvest"

Pattern - $3.50 each (Discounts available on quantity buys)		 A 9” tall 12 “diameter bowl designed with neutral colors making it a stunning centerpiece to compliment any décor. With its solid wood base and ample size, it can be used to serve bread at large family get-togethers or as a centerpiece filled with pinecones or fruit. The basket’s unique rim gives the basic start-and-stop weave added interest.

    Workshop Descriptions:

  •     Beginner Workshops - Our "beginner" workshops are geared towards individuals who have little or no prior experience weaving baskets, but would like to make a basket.   The focus of these workshops is for the student to go home with a basket they have made in addition to getting an introduction to basket weaving.  All of the necessary tools and materials to make a basket are supplied.  Students should come with an open mind and be prepared to have fun.
  •     Experienced Workshops - Our "experienced" workshops are geared toward individuals who identify themselves as "basket weavers" having woven baskets in the past and would like to enhance their basket weaving skills.  The focus is to educate the students so they are able to leave the workshop with new skills.  Projects will be more complicated and may not be finished in the workshop, however, students will leave with the skills and materials to complete their baskets on their own.  These workshops expect students to have bring basic basket weaving tools.  As in the beginning workshops, students should come with an open mind and be prepared to have fun.
  •    Basket Weaving Kits - Our basket weaving kits include all of the materials with an expanded version of the pattern which includes detailed instructions and photos so that you can easily make the basket at your own pace.  The basket weaving kit assumes students have basic basket weaving skills and tools.
  •    Basket Weaving Patterns - Our basket weaving patterns include material lists, step by step instructions. Basic instructions are not included.  Also be sure to ask about quantity discounts on patterns. 

What to Expect from a Prairie Spirit Workshop

  •     Workshops are conducted in my private in-home studio
  •     Workshop size is limited to 8 students to ensure a quality experience for the students
  •     Feel free to bring a lunch or snacks.
  •     Bring your weaving tools.  For beginning weavers, basic tools are provided.
